We provide live remote repair for the C123EF0 (HBC limit reached) fault affecting ABS systems. This service restores functionality without replacing the module.
How C123EF0 Happens
C123EF0 — "Hydraulic Brake Booster – limit value reached" (also called HBC or HBB limit) — is stored by the Bosch ABS/ESP module on MLB Evo vehicles. It is a protection counter, not a hardware failure:
- Low vacuum is detected. The brake booster pressure sensor reports that the vacuum brake booster is not giving enough assist.
- The ABS pump steps in. The Bosch ABS/ESP module runs its hydraulic pump to build extra brake pressure — this is Hydraulic Brake Boost Compensation (HBC).
- Every intervention is counted. The module stores how many times, and for how long, the pump had to compensate, to protect the pump motor from overuse.
- The counter hits its limit. The module locks C123EF0 as a permanent fault, disables HBC and shows the brake warning in the cluster.
- Scan tools can't clear it. ODIS, VCDS, Autel, Launch and similar tools can read C123EF0 but cannot reset the stored counter. The module itself is usually perfectly healthy.
Root Causes to Check First
The counter only climbs because the booster is losing vacuum. Find and fix that cause before the reset — otherwise C123EF0 will return.
1. Brake booster pressure / vacuum sensor — most common
A drifting or failed sensor reports low vacuum even when the booster is fine, so the pump keeps intervening. Compare the live booster pressure value with a mechanical vacuum gauge; if they disagree, replace the sensor.
2. Vacuum leak in the booster hose
Cracked hoses, loose clamps or a damaged booster connection bleed off vacuum. Listen for hissing with the engine running and smoke-test the line.
3. Failed check valve
The one-way valve should hold vacuum in the booster after the engine stops. If the pedal goes hard after a few presses with the engine off, the valve is leaking back.
4. Weak mechanical or electric vacuum pump
A tired pump can't reach target vacuum, especially at idle or with start-stop. Measure vacuum at the booster hose and check for pump-related fault codes.
5. Brake booster diaphragm leak
Less common, but an internal booster leak gives the same low-vacuum signal. Suspect it when the sensor, hoses, valve and pump all test good.
Symptoms & Dashboard Messages
- "Brake system fault – stop carefully" (red brake warning in the cluster)
- "Brake system fault – you can continue driving" / brake assist warning on some models
- ABS / ESP warning lights on
- Hard or inconsistent brake pedal, reduced brake assist
- C123EF0 stored as a permanent fault that returns immediately after clearing
Service Approach
This service restores module functionality without replacing the unit by addressing internal system limits through controlled remote execution. Remote execution is performed via DOIP communication using a direct vehicle connection.
